Biblia 1776

The Biblia 1776 (Biblia, Se on: Koko Pyhä Raamattu, Suomeksi) is a revision of the Finnish Bible of 1642, the first translation of the whole Bible into Finnish, made by a committee led by Bishop Isaacus Rothovius. The 1776 edition was meant for the church and also for reading at home.

It belongs to the Lutheran tradition and builds on the 1642 text, following the word-for-word habits of that school of translation. The text here comes from the FinBiblia module of the CrossWire (SWORD) project, prepared by Tero Favorin.

Its limits are plain. The Finnish is that of 1776, with older spelling and vocabulary that a modern reader has to work through slowly. For everyday reading, the 1933/1938 Pyhä Raamattu, also on Midvash, is the natural choice, since it replaced this Bible as the church's official text.

The text is in the public domain. Its value is historical and devotional: it lets you read the Bible as generations of Finns heard it in church and at home, and compare its older language with the 1933/1938 translation.
