Diodati 1885

it

The Diodati 1885 is an edition of the Italian Bible of Giovanni Diodati, the Reformed theologian of Geneva whose translation served Italian-speaking Protestants as their standard text for more than three centuries. eBible.org records the work as translated in 1641 and revised in 1821, and the module used here follows the 1885 edition.

Diodati translated from the Hebrew and Greek originals in clear, sober Italian. As in the printing practice of the time, words the translator had to add to complete the sense appear in square brackets, so the reader can tell what stands in the original from what is supplied for clarity.

It helps to be plain about what this edition is. Midvash already carries the Bibbia Diodati 1649 and the Riveduta 1927. The 1885 is the same Diodati tradition in a later printing, while the Riveduta is something different: a twentieth-century revision by Giovanni Luzzi in more modern Italian. From the sources we checked, we could not confirm which textual differences separate the 1885 from the 1649. It serves readers who want classic Diodati in nineteenth-century spelling and presentation, or who want to compare printings.

The text is in the public domain according to eBible.org, with the United Bible Societies credited as contributor. That means it can be read, quoted and studied freely, and it adds one more link to the long history of the Italian Bible.
