Almeida 1911
pt-br
This is the Almeida Revista e Corrigida (Revised and Corrected) in a 1911 edition, with its original spelling. It descends from João Ferreira de Almeida's translation, whose New Testament appeared in 1681, and from the revision completed in 1898 under the Bible Societies, which consolidated decades of work done in London and fixed the text known as the Revista e Corrigida. Until around 1940 it was reprinted outside Brazil, in England and the United States, by the British, American and Trinitarian Bible Societies. This edition comes from that period.
The method is classic Almeida: formal translation that stays close to the shape of the Hebrew and Greek sentences, with a solemn vocabulary and the traditional New Testament text, the same manuscript family behind the King James. Anyone who reads the ARC today will recognize nearly every line, because the Bible Society of Brazil revised this same text in 1949, 1969, 1995 and 2009. The modern ARC is nonetheless a different edition, with updated spelling, vocabulary changes and a copyright held by the Society. What you have here is the text before those revisions.
The honest limit shows up in the first verse: "No principio creou Deus os céus e a terra", and the earth is "sem fórma e vasia". The spelling predates the Portuguese orthographic reforms of the twentieth century, so you meet aquelle, n'elle, abysmo. For steady devotional reading that wears on you, and searching can miss words typed in today's spelling. For anyone interested in the history of the text, or in how the Bible reached Brazilian churches a century ago, it is a precious document. For daily reading, keep a modern Almeida alongside it.
This edition is in the public domain: the text is more than a hundred years old and belongs to no publisher. The file used in Midvash comes from the open damarals/biblias repository on GitHub, where it is published as public domain, and Projeto Euaggelion lists it the same way. That is why it can be read, quoted and shared without asking permission.
