²¹Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:t

Matthew 5 opens the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus' most concentrated teaching on the ethics of the kingdom of heaven. It begins with the Beatitudes, a series of blessings that invert worldly values, pronouncing favor on the poor in spirit, the meek, and the persecuted. Jesus then calls
