Romans 11:7-8

⁷What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,

⁸as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”g

Romans 11 is the climax of Paul's agonizing reflection on Israel's place in God's redemptive plan. Having argued that Israel's rejection of the gospel is neither total nor final, Paul now unveils the mystery of God's sovereign purposes: the hardening of part of Israel has opened
