Genesis 11:4

⁴Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”b

Genesis 11 presents the narrative of the Tower of Babel, a pivotal story illustrating humanity's continued rebellion against God after the flood. United by a common language, people settle in Shinar and attempt to build a city and a tower “reaching to the heavens,” seeking to make a name for themselves and avoid dispersion. God intervenes by confusing their language, scattering them across the earth, and thus fulfilling His original command to fill the earth. The chapter concludes with the genealogy of Shem, tracing the lineage from Noah to Abram, setting the stage for God's covenant with Abram in the next chapter.
