Genesis 34:2-4

²But when the local prince, Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, saw Dinah, he seized her and raped her.

³But then he fell in love with her, and he tried to win her affection with tender words.

⁴He said to his father, Hamor, “Get me this young girl. I want to marry her.”

Genesis 34 recounts a dark and violent episode involving Jacob's family and the Hivite inhabitants of Shechem. Dinah, Jacob's daughter, is raped by Shechem, the son of Hamor, the city's ruler. In response, Dinah's brothers, Simeon and Levi, exact brutal revenge by slaughtering all the men of Shechem after they agree to be circumcised, a deceptive condition for marriage. This chapter exposes the deep moral failings within Jacob's household and the tragic consequences of unchecked anger and deceit.
