Joshua 9:9-10

⁹They said, "From a far-off country, very far away. Your servants came because we''d heard such great things about GOD, your God--all those things he did in Egypt!

¹⁰And the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth!

Joshua 9 details a cunning deception by the Gibeonites, who, fearing Israel's military might after the victories at Jericho and Ai, pretend to be from a distant land to secure a peace treaty. Joshua and the leaders of Israel, failing to consult the Lord, fall for the ruse and make a covenant with them. When the truth is discovered, Israel cannot break their oath, so they condemn the Gibeonites to perpetual servitude, becoming woodcutters and water carriers for the tabernacle. This chapter highlights the consequences of acting without divine counsel and God's faithfulness even when His people err.
