Exodus 32:6-8

⁶Early the next morning, the people got up and offered Whole-Burnt-Offerings and brought Peace-Offerings. The people sat down to eat and drink and then began to party. It turned into a wild party!b

⁷GOD spoke to Moses, "Go! Get down there! Your people whom you brought up from the land of Egypt have fallen to pieces.

⁸In no time at all they''ve turned away from the way I commanded them: They made a molten calf and worshiped it. They''ve sacrificed to it and said, "These are the gods, O Israel, that brought you up from the land of Egypt!''"

Exodus 32 recounts the tragic episode of Israel's idolatry at Mount Sinai. While Moses is on the mountain receiving the Law from God, the people grow impatient and demand Aaron make them a god. Aaron complies, fashioning a golden calf, which they worship as the god who brought them out of Egypt. God's furious response and Moses's intercession highlight the severity of their sin and the depth of divine mercy, ultimately leading to a confrontation, judgment, and a renewed, albeit costly, covenant relationship.
