1 Samuele 8 segna una svolta cruciale nella storia d'Israele: il popolo chiede un re. Samuele, ormai anziano, ha nominato i suoi figli come giudici, ma essi non seguono la sua integrità. Gli anziani d'Israele si presentano a Samuele a Rama e chiedono un re «come tutte le nazioni»
