Genesis 11:8-9

⁸So the LORD scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.f

⁹Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. From there, the LORD scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.g

Genesis 11 presents the narrative of the Tower of Babel, a pivotal story illustrating humanity's continued rebellion against God after the flood. United by a common language, people settle in Shinar and attempt to build a city and a tower “reaching to the heavens,” seeking to make a name for themselves and avoid dispersion. God intervenes by confusing their language, scattering them across the earth, and thus fulfilling His original command to fill the earth. The chapter concludes with the genealogy of Shem, tracing the lineage from Noah to Abram, setting the stage for God's covenant with Abram in the next chapter.
