Numbers 21:7-9

⁷Then the people came to Moses and cried out, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take away the snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people.

⁸Then the Lord told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!”b

⁹So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to a pole. Then anyone who was bitten by a snake could look at the bronze snake and be healed!c

Numbers 21 recounts Israel's continued journey through the wilderness, marked by both victory and severe judgment. It opens with a triumph over the Canaanites, but quickly shifts to the people's renewed grumbling against God and Moses, leading to a plague of poisonous snakes. God provides a unique remedy through a bronze serpent, foreshadowing Christ's redemptive work. The chapter concludes with Israel's successful military campaigns against Sihon and Og, securing territory east of the Jordan, demonstrating God's faithfulness despite their failures.
