Judges 21:2

²Now the people went to Bethel and sat in the presence of God until evening, weeping loudly and bitterly.

Judges 21 concludes the book of Judges with a disturbing account of how the remaining Israelite tribes secured wives for the 600 surviving Benjamite men, preventing the extinction of the tribe. Driven by a rash oath not to give their daughters to Benjamin, and having annihilated most of Jabesh-Gilead for not joining the war, the Israelites orchestrate the abduction of virgins from Shiloh. This chapter highlights the moral decay and chaos that defined Israel “when there was no king in Israel, and everyone did what was right in their own eyes.”
