Isaiah 11:1-3

¹A green Shoot will sprout from Jesse''s stump, from his roots a budding Branch.a

²The life-giving Spirit of GOD will hover over him, the Spirit that brings wisdom and understanding, The Spirit that gives direction and builds strength, the Spirit that instills knowledge and Fear-of-GOD.b

³Fear-of-GOD will be all his joy and delight. He won''t judge by appearances, won''t decide on the basis of hearsay.c

Isaiah 11 is one of the most majestic messianic passages in the Old Testament. It opens with a tender image: a shoot sprouting from the stump of Jesse, a promise of new life after the judgment of the felled tree of David's dynasty. The chapter then describes the Spirit-anointed King
