John 5:5-6

⁵And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.b

⁶When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?c

John 5 pivots from Jesus’ ministry in Galilee to a dramatic confrontation in Jerusalem. At the pool of Bethesda, Jesus heals a man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years — and then tells him to pick up his mat and walk. The healing itself is remarkable, but the controversy
