Genesis 16:13-14

¹³So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”b

¹⁴Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.

Genesis 16 recounts the tragic story of Sarai's impatience and Hagar's mistreatment, leading to the birth of Ishmael. Faced with barrenness and a delayed promise, Sarai takes matters into her own hands, offering her servant Hagar to Abram as a surrogate. This decision sparks conflict, Hagar flees, and an angel of the Lord intervenes, promising Hagar a multitude of descendants and instructing her to return. The chapter highlights the human tendency to try and “help” God fulfill His promises, often with painful and lasting consequences, while also showcasing God's compassionate care for the vulnerable.
