Joshua 13 marks a significant transition in the book of Joshua, moving from the record of conquest to the details of inheritance. With Joshua now old, the Lord reminds him that much land remains to be taken. The chapter then outlines the territories already conquered east of the Jordan, which Moses had allotted to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh. It also details the land yet to be possessed in Canaan proper, setting the stage for the division of the land among the remaining tribes.
