James 4:6-10

⁶But he giveth more grace. Wherefore [the scripture] saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.f

⁷Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you.g

⁸Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded.h

⁹Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.i

¹⁰Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.j

James 4 cuts to the heart of the conflict within the Christian community, diagnosing its root cause as disordered desire and friendship with the world. James calls for radical humility before God, repentance from double-mindedness, and a cessation of slander against one another. The
